What's the difference between a jam and a band performance?
A jam is when a group of musicians sit around, usually in a circle, to pick for their own enjoyment. An audience gathers at times and is welcome to listen, but if the goal is to  play for the audience, with the focus on the audience's enjoyment, that is a band performance. Usually the musicians will face the audience for a performance.
